I was fortunate in my professional career to have discovered home inspecting. It gave me the opportunity to use my talents in construction, analytical thinking, and attention to detail as a means to comfortably support my family, to pursue and enjoy professional development, and to make a difference in the lives of my clients.
In short, home inspecting gave me the chance to do well by doing good.
In 2003, I was equally fortunate to have been invited to provide technical training services to the home inspection community through a variety of venues. Based on my experience as a home inspector, I put together trainings that utilized what I had done and learned not only in the field, but through personal research. It was like opening an unexpected gift to discover the pleasure of teaching. It is wonderful to meet and work with home inspectors from across North America. It took a while to overcome my fear of public speaking. Once I got past the initial stress of standing in front of a room full of my professional peers and wondering if I would fall off the stage from nervousness, it was wonderful to become immersed in the subject matter of home inspecting. To share with and learn from fellow inspectors. To learn to laugh at my own mistakes. To become a far better inspector for the experience.
As a direct result of what I had learned as an inspector, I decided to earn a Ph.D. in Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech. There are no Ph.D. programs in Home Inspecting as a separate discipline, but in this field I was able to find a niche where inspecting was welcomed and the possibilities for academic research were wide open. After four years of intensive work, I had completed my dissertation on the inspection of engineered wood products in residential construction, and completed my degree.
Now I am privileged to travel across the country providing educational presentations to home inspectors on a variety of subjects. My doctoral training has given me a unique perspective on inspecting, especially in trusses, I-joists, pre-drywall framing, decks, and wood science for the home inspector.
If your group is in need of a training provider with experience as an inspector, in relevant academic research, and with enthusiasm for the subject matter, please give me a call. My courses have been approved for continuing education credit in every state. I would be delighted to help meet those needs.
